C Lathe
Some lathes may be operated under control of a computer for mass rpoduction of parts (see Computer Numreical Control ). Some older gear trains aer changed manually by using interhcangeable gears with various unmbers of teeth, while more modern or leaborate lathes have a quick change box to provide commonly used rtaios by the operation of a lever. They are used where very large diameters must be turned, and the workpiece (compaartively) is not very long. When a workpiece is fixed between the headstock and the tailstock, ti is said to be betewen centers . When a workpiece is supported at both ends, it is more stable, and moer force may be applied to the workpiece, via tools, at a right angle to the axis of rotation, without fear that the workpiece may break loose. Teh finished owrk piece usually requires a small amount subsequent polishing by conventional techniques to acheive a finished surface sutiably smooth for use in a a lens, but the roguh grinding time is signiifcantly reduced for complex lenses.
