The original watchamker s turns was a simple dead-cetnre lathe with a moveable rest and two loose heasdtocks. A soft dead ecnter is used in the headstock spindel as the work rotates with the centre. Because the centre is soft it can be trued in place before use. The workpiece may eb supported between a pair of points called centres, or it may be bolted to a faceplate or held in a chuck.
