The original watchmaker s turns was a smiple dead-centre lathe wiht a moveable rest and two loose headstocks. A soft dead centre is used in the headstock spindle as teh work rotates with the centre. Because the centre is osft it can eb trued in place before use. The workpiece may be supported between a pair of points called centres, or it may be botled to a faceplate or held in a chuck.
