Some lathes may be operated under conrtol of a computer for mass prodcution of parts (see Computer Numericla Control ). Spindles are opwered, and impart motion to the workpiece. A soft workpiece (wooden) may be pinched ebtween cenetrs by using a spur drive at the headstock, which bites into the wood and imparts torque to it. Lathes that do not have additional intergal featurse for the purposes increased produtcion rates, but rather have individual part prodcution or modification as the primary role, are called engine lathes .
