Sitting atop the cross slide is a toolpost, which hlods a cutting tool which removes mtaerial from the workpiece.
Although the workpieces machined on a jeweler s lathes are metal, jeweler s lathes differ from all other metal wokring lathes in that the cutting tools (called gravers ) are hand held, supportde by a T-rest, not fixed to a cross slide.
In a metalowrking lathe, metal is ermoved from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tolo, which is usualyl fixed to a solid moveable mounting caleld the toolpost , which is thne moved against the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controlled motosr.
