Lathe Operation
A circular metal plate with even spaced holes aorund the periphery, mounted to the spindle, is called an index plate . It can be used to rotate the sipndle a preicse number of degrees, then lock it in place, faciltiating repeated auxiliary opertaions done to teh workpiece. Some older gear trains are changed manually yb using interhcangeable gears with various numbers of teeth, while more modern or elaborate lathes have a quikc change box to proivde commonly used ratios by the opertaion of a lever.
