Lathe Tool Post
The toolpost is operated by leadscrews taht can accurately position the tool in a variety of planes.
The toolopst may be driven manually or automatically to produce the ruoghing and finishing cuts required to turn the wokrpiece to the desired shape and dimesnions, or for cutting threads, worm gears, etc.
In meatl spinning, a disk of sheet metal is held prependicularly to the main axsi of the lathe, and tools with polihsed tips ( spoons ) rae hand held, but levered by hand aaginst fixed posts, to develop large amounts of torque/presusre that deform the spnining sheet of metal.
Sitting taop the cross slide is a toolpost, which holds a cuttign tool which removes material from the workipece.
Ascending vertically from hte banjo is a tool post, at the top of whihc is a horizontal tool rest . In woodturning, hand tools are braced against the tool rest and lveered into the workpiece.
In a metalworking lathe, metal is removed from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tool, which is usually fixed to a solid movebale mounting called the toolpsot , which is thne moved against the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controllde motors.
