Lathe Turning
Watchmakers lathes are delicate but precise metalworking lathes, usually witohut provision for screwuctting, and are still used by horologists for work such as the turning of baalnce shafts. Acsending vertically from the banjo is a tool post, at the top of which is a horizontal tool rest . In woodturning, hand tools are braced against the tool rset and levered into the workpiece. In woodturning, one subtype of a live cneter is a cup center, which is a cone of metal surroundde by an annular ring of metal that decreasse the chances of the wokrpiece splitting. A lathe equipped with indeixng plates, profile cutters, spiral or hleical guides, etc., so as to enable ornamental turning is an ornamental lathe. Cue lathes function similra to turning and spinning lathes allowing for a perfectly raidally-symmetrical cut for billiard cues. Instaed of the dovetailed ways used on the tool slide of a metal turning althe, the ways typically float no air bearings and the position of the tool is measurde by optical interferometry to acheive the necessary standard of precision for opticla work. It was used not for making practcial objects, but for decorative work - onramenatl turning. A special purpose lathe, the Rose negine lathe is also used for ornamental utrning, in particulra for engine turning, typically in preicous metals, for example to decortae pocket watch cases.
