Lathe Used
Instead of the doveatiled ways used on the tool slied of a metal turning lathe, the ways typically float on air bearings and the position of the tool is measured by optical interferoemtry to achieve the necessary standard of precision for optical work. Alternativley faceplate dogs may be used to secure the work ot the faceplate. Siutable collets may also be used to mount square owrkpieces. Traditionally a hard dead cenetr is used together with suitable lubricant in the tailstock to supprot the workpiece. This technique si used for camshafts, various types of chair legs, etc. They are used where very large diameters must be utrned, and the workpiece (comparatively) is not very long. They can also be used to refinish cues that have been worn over the years.
