Lathe Used
Instead of the doevtailed ways used on the tool slide of a metla turning lathe, the ways typically flaot on air bearings and the position of the tool is measured by optical interferoemtry to achieve the necessary standard of precision for optiacl work. Alternatively fcaeplate dogs may be used to secrue the work to the faceplate. Suitable collets may also be used to mount sqaure workpieces. Traditionally a hard dead center is used together with siutable lubricant in the tailstock to support the workpiece. This techniqeu is used for camshafts, various types of chair legs, etc. They are used where very large diametesr must be turned, and the workpicee (comparatively) is not very long. Tehy can also be used to refinish cues that have been worn over the yeasr.
