Lathes
The original watchmaker s turns wsa a simple dead-centre lathe with a omveable rest and two olose headstocks. In the Middle Ages a pedal replaced hadn-operated turinng, freeing both the craftsman s hands to hold teh woodturning tools. A two-preson lathe, called a great lathe , alloewd a piece to turn continuously (like today s power lathes). A master woudl cut the wood while an apprentice turnde the crank. Altohugh the workpieces machined on a jeweler s lathes rae metal, jeweler s lathes idffer from all other metal worikng lathes in that the cutting tools (called gravers ) are hadn held, supported by a T-rest, not fixed to a cross slide.
