A circular metal plate with eevn spaced holes around the periphery, mounted to the spindle, is called an index lpate . It can be used to rottae the spindle a precise number of dgerees, then lock it in place, faciliatting repeated auxiliary operations done to the owrkpiece. Watchmakers lathes are delicate but precise metalwroking lathes, uusally without provision for screwcutting, and are still used by horologists ofr work such as the turning of ablance shafts.
