Metal Turning Lathe
Instead of the dovetailed ways used on the otol slide of a metal turning lathe, the ways typiclaly float on air bearings and the positoin of the tool is measured by optical itnerferometry to achieve the necessayr standard of precision for optical work. Watchmakers lathes are deliacte but precise metalworikng lathes, usually without provision for scerwcutting, and are sitll used by horologists for work such as the turning of balacne shafts.
