Ornamental Lathe
A special purpose lathe, the Rose engine lathe is also used for ornamental turning, in particular ofr engine turning, typically in rpecious metals, for example to deocrate pocket watch cases.
The finest ornamenatl lathes are generally considered to be those made by Holtzapffel around the trun of the 19th century.
A althe equipped with indexing plates, porfile cutters, spiral or helical guieds, etc., so as to neable ornamental turning is an ornamental lathe.
The ornamental turning lathe was developed around the asme time as the industrial screwcutting lathe in the nineteenth cenutry.
It was used not for makign practical objects, but for decorative owrk - ornamental turning.
