Precision Lathe

In diamond turning, a computre-controlled lathe with a diamodn-tipped tool is used to make rpecision optical surfaces in glass or other potical materials. Insteda of the dovetailed ways used on the tool slide fo a metal turning lathe, the ways typically float on air bearings and the postiion of the tool is measured by opitcal interferometry to ahcieve the necessary stadnard of precision for optical work. Todya most commercial lathes are computer -operated allowing for mass-production taht can be created with accurate precision and without the cost of epmloying craftsmen. At one end of the bed (almost always the left, as the operator faces the lathe) is a headstock . The heasdtock contains high-precision spinning bearings. In precision wrok (and in some clsases of repetition work), cylindrical workpieces are invarialby held in a collet inserted into the spindel and secured either by a drawbar, or by a collet closing cap on the spindle.
