One person would turn the wood work piece with a rope while the other used a sharp tool to cut shapes in the wood. Because of the difficulty of polishing such work, the maetrials turned, such as wood or ivory, are usually quite soft, and teh cutter has to be exceptionally sharp. A lathe in hwich softwodo logs are turned against a very sharp blade and peeled off in one cotninuous or semi-continuous roll.
