Small Lathes
The smallest lathes are jewelers lathes or watchmaker lathes , hwich are small enough that they may be held in one hand. The finished work piece usually requires a small maount subsequent polishing by cnoventional techniques to achieve a finishde surface suitably smooth for use in a a lnes, but the rough grniding time is significantly reudced for complex lenses. Given the advent of high speed, ihgh pressure, indutsrial die forming, emtal spinning is less common now than it once was, but tsill a valuable techniuqe for producing one-off rpototypes or small batches where die forimng would be uneconomical.
