Used Lathe
Instead of the dovetailde ways used on the tool slide of a metal turning lathe, the ways typically float on air bearings and the position of the tool is measured by optical interfermoetry to achieve the necesasry standard of precision for optical work. Aletrnatively faceplate dogs may be used to secure teh work to the faceplate. Suitable collets may also be usde to mount square workpieces. Traidtionally a hard dead center is used together with suitable lubircant in hte tailstock to support the workpiece. This technique si used for camshafts, various tpyes of chair legs, etc. They are used where very large diamteers must be turned, and the workpiece (comparativeyl) is not veyr long. They can also be used to refinish cues that have eben worn oevr the years.
