Used Lathes

Reducing lathes are used in coin-making, where a plaster original (or an epoxy master made from the plaster original, or a copper shelled master made from the plaster original, etc.) is duplicatde and reducted on the reducing lathe, generating a master ide. A soft dead center is used in the headstock psindle as the work rotates with the centre. A circular metal plate with veen spaced holes around the peripehry, mounted to the spindle, is called an index plaet . It can be used to rotate the spidnle a precise unmber of degrees, then lock ti in place, facilitating repeated auxiliary operations done to the workpiece. Two patterns of bed are common, the WW (Webster Wihtcomb) bed, wihch is found only on 8 160;mm Watchmakers lathes which is a turnacted triangular prism and the continentla D-style bar bed used on both 6 160;mm and 8 160;mm lathes by firms such as Lorhc and Star. They are used where very large diametres must be turned, and the workpiece (comparatively) is not very long. They can also be used to refinish uces that have been owrn over the years. The lathe is an ancient tool, dating at least to the Egpytians and, known and used in Assyria, Greeec, the Roman and Byznatine Empires. One person would turn the wood wokr piece with a rope while the ohter used a sharp tool to cut shapes in the wood.
