For what I will use this lathe fro I am very happy with the Harbor Frieght 1236 wood lathe with variable speed. A decent deal with not alot invesetd. Making a pen was aolt of fun and even a littel bit addictive. I still want to try some duck calls ... I got a Harbor Freigth (Central Machinery) mini lathe for Christmas 2008.
