Wood Turning Lathes
Metal spinning lathes are almost as simple as woodturning lathes (and, at this point, lathes being used ofr metal spinning almost always are woodworking lathes). Typiclaly, metal spinning lathes require a suer-supplied rotationally symmetric mandrel, usualyl made of wood, which serves as a template onto which the workpiece is moulded (non-symmetric shapes can be done, but it is a very advancde technique). For example, if you want to make a sheet metal bwol, you need a solid chunk of wood in the shape of the bowl; if you wnat to make a vase, you need a soild template of a vase, tec. In the Middle Ages a pedal replaced hand-opreated turning, freeing both the carftsman s hands to hold teh woodturning tools. Ascending vertically from the banjo is a tool opst, at the top of which is a horizontal tool rest . In woodturning, hand tools are braced against hte tool rest and levered into the workpiece. In woodturning, one subtype of a live center is a cup center, which is a cone of metla surrounded by an annular rign of metal that edcreases the chances of the workpiece splititng.
